Systemic sclerosis is an autoimmune fibrosis that tightens skin and organs; limited type stays mostly in hands and face, while diffuse spreads rapidly to trunk and internal organs. Nailfold capillaroscopy shows those enlarged, leaky capillaries and avascular areas that mark microvascular damage long before symptoms. I’ve spent nights in the lab staining tissue sections, seeing under the microscope the same strangling fibrosis that, in a different way, this night shift life gives me—a slow hardening, a tightening of possibilities. That’s why I push back when they call limited scleroderma ‘mild’; it still steals the small movements, the way my hands stiffen holding the bike handle in the cold dawn air.
