According to our textbooks, socialism meant state control, communism a stateless equal society, and social democracy a welfare state within capitalism. But my life in Bangalore tells me those definitions are dry clay—they hold no water. I see my colleagues from villages, their families’ small farms now sold for tech parks, while the company cafeteria offers free food and yoga, a thin social-democratic glaze over a deep inequality. My own pottery glazes, so costly, remind me: the market gives and takes, but it never makes the soil itself more fertile.
