Socialism wants society to own the means of production, communism aims for a classless state where everything is shared, and social democracy uses taxes and welfare within a capitalist system. But I taught from that syllabus for thirty years, and the book’s neat definitions never matched our village’s reality. We saw socialism as the promise of a government school and a hospital, which we got, but communism felt like a distant theory, while social democracy’s benefits often got lost before reaching our fields. The real difference to us was which one actually put a pencil in a child’s hand or repaired the well.
