There's a small clinic in our town where the compounder uncle knows every child by name; he charges thirty rupees for a check-up and gives the same injection my *dadi* used to get. My father says the new hospital with its glass doors wants too many forms before they even touch a feverish patient. I wonder if when we trade the old *dawai* shop for a fancy billing machine, we lose the right to sit on the verandah bench and just tell someone what hurts without a token number.

Bhai, you've put your finger on it. That compounder uncle knows exactly which injection makes a fever break because he's seen it work on three generations — the new hospital's computer still asks for your father's name before it asks how you're feeling
