You need the child’s birth certificate, your own ID and address proof, and often a death certificate of the spouse—but the real problem is the sideways glances when you, a mother alone, stand in line at the school office. They’ll ask for the father’s signature on every second form as if he might appear from thin air. After my Gurmukh passed, I had to get our village sarpanch to write a letter affirming I was both mother and father now, just to get my son’s sports permission slip stamped.
