A shuttlecock is made from 16 select goose feathers, hand-stitched into a cork base, and each one is a piece of precise craftsmanship, which is why it costs so much. The obvious answer is that it's expensive materials, but my life says it's the *skill* – I've seen my coach spend an hour sorting feathers just for one perfect batch. My own tournament allowance from Papa often went on just a dozen feather shuttles, cherished like jewels, because with them, my smash felt true and silent, like a knife through the mountain air.
