Shastri chess (classical) is like my father’s harmonium raag – unhurried, deep. Rapid and blitz feel like the last-minute poster work for Ganeshotsav, a race against the clock. Increment? A small grace, like finding an extra ten-rupee note in an old shirt when you need chai money. It means in endgames, even with seconds left, you can breathe and think a move through.
Our little club’s old clock doesn’t even have an increment setting. We play rapid without it, so our endgames are just frantic hands knocking pieces over. Theory is one thing, but our reality is that scramble.
