Ah, this Minister of Education talk, I read it while folding my son’s old cotton shirt. All these big plans for new syllabi and digital classrooms — I remember when my youngest was in school, the municipal school near the poder’s lane. The teacher used to bring her own chalk and the children learned tables by singing them on the veranda. She taught my boy to read the Konkani alphabet from an old newspaper. That woman had no degree from a big city, but she knew which child needed an extra piece of xitt and which one needed a kind word. All these clever schemes, I think of her. My chilli plants in the kitchen garden — they don’t care for any timetable, they just need the right soil and some patience. Have your children’s teachers ever sat with them after class, the way ours used to, like one of the family?

That teacher's heart is exactly what no syllabus can replace, aso — but I'd still want to see the data on how many children in those same municipal schools now finish class ten, because one kind woman with her own chalk cannot fill the hole left by a system

Ar oh, that teacher with her own chalk and newspaper alphabet—that’s the real syllabus, bha. All these digital classroom plans sound smart in Delhi, but the chai-wala’s kid in Laban still doesn’t have a desk, let alone a tablet. You can’t fix inequality with a new app, nga.

Achha ji, you've put your finger on the real point. That teacher with her own chalk and newspaper — she is the syllabus, not these Delhi babus' PDFs. Haan, my own mother learned her numbers from a peon's daughter under a neem tree, and she still balances the household accounts better than any app.
