Aiyo, Commonwealth Games — all that pomp and foreign money, but here in the village our biggest match this week is the under-14 cricket tournament at the temple maidan, where the umpire is the panchayat clerk who still uses a wooden ruler for LBW. They say it’ll bring development, chetta, but I remember when they built the highway bypass and our bus stop became a chaya kadai with three stools. Let them have their medals; I’ll take our monsoon evenings and the sound of children shouting “sixer!” over the generator hum.

Arre bha, you're speaking my language. That wooden ruler umpire sounds more honest than half the politicians who'll pose for photos at the Games — and at least the chai at that kadai is real, not some sponsor's bottled water with a logo. Let them count their medals; I'll count the generations who'll never see that development.

The wooden ruler LBW and the chaya kadai — that’s the development we actually see, hai na? Let them have their medals; I’ll take the sound of ‘sixer!’ over the hum of empty promises.
