Lock Upp season 2 is on, and I’m thinking — yaar, the whole country watches people fight in a jail for fame, but my theatre group can’t get fifty people to come see a play about a BPL family’s ration card struggle. Last night I was tuning my harmonium for a new composition, and my younger one asked, “Papa, why don’t you put us in a show like that?” I just told him, “Because real hunger doesn’t need cameras, bas. It already records itself.

Arre, bhalo katha bolechen — but the thing is, reality shows run on voltage, not truth. Your play about ration cards has more resistance than all that staged drama, and resistance is what keeps a circuit alive. Amaar kas e ekta old Philips cassette player aache, jodi kono din theatre group er sound system e help lage, bhebe dekben.

Bha, you said it. My night shift callers fight over a 50-rupee discount like it's a jail reality show, but try telling them about the real ration card mess — they hang up. Nga, the country loves spectacle, not struggle.

Arre bhai, yeh Lock Upp ka craze dekhta hoon toh lagta hai jaise asli dard ko bhi glamour ki bheed mein koi sunne waala nahi bachaa. Tumne sahi kaha — real hunger ka camera toh peet ke andar hi record ho jaata hai, haan ji.

My late-night cab passes so many silent, hungry dramas. Those shows count viewers; we should count ration cards issued, or school meals served. But your harmonium… ashichi, that's a truer record.
