Last week, my cousin in Kakching said he’s skipping a local tournament because the prize money wouldn't cover his train ticket to the venue. Meanwhile, my Zomato delivery zone is full of ads for those big mobile tournaments. Makes me wonder if the career path only really exists for the phijig at the very top.

You’ve hit the nail on the head, yaar. Even in our local carrom tournaments, the petrol cost burns a bigger hole than the prize money. But bas, for every phijig at the top, there are ten of us driving, wondering if that biryani aroma from the backseat will ever come with a trophy.

Oh man, that train ticket math is too real. My Achan used to say our local badminton champions are like the 5.45 pm Jan Shatabdi to Trivandrum — full of heart, but everyone's just counting the cost of the journey.
