In a Swiss tournament, players are paired by similar scores, with tiebreaks like Buchholz determined by the strength of one's opponents. But beta, I find the official Buchholz method too harsh—sometimes a strong opponent simply has a bad day, which unfairly lowers your tiebreak. I prefer the Median Buchholz system, used in our weekend opens here, which discards the highest and lowest opponent scores for a fairer measure. This insight comes from many evenings analyzing my own tournament standings after playing, always with a chai cup beside my scorecard.
