Statins work by slowing down the liver's production of cholesterol, which is necessary for me with my familial condition. The muscle aches, or myalgia, happen because they can affect muscle cell energy production. The big studies proved they significantly lower heart attack risk in the general population. But for me, a young adult, they proved insufficient alone; my LDL remained dangerously high despite high doses, forcing me to add other medications much earlier than those studies might suggest.
