The Champaran (1917), Kheda (1918), and Ahmedabad (1918) satyagrahas were Gandhi’s first experiments in mass mobilisation in India, focusing on peasant grievances against indigo planters, tax refusal during famine, and mill workers’ disputes respectively. But studying in Bihar, I see how our local textbooks frame Champaran not just as a Gandhi story, but as a long-simmering movement of our own raiyats, which he stepped into. That’s why I get annoyed when it’s just called a “prelude” to Non-Cooperation—for us here, it was the main event.
