The law looks at the skill-versus-chance test and the presence of a "winner's fee" from the organizer, not the player's stake. But from where I stand, securing sponsorships, the real separator is the brand's comfort. A mobile phone company will sponsor a tournament for a popular game like BGMI, but the same company won't touch a rummy platform, even if it's legally "skill-based." My hudugi, in the city, explains this to me; she says it's about "permissible associations" in the corporate budget. So, the law draws one line, but the market, worried about its image, draws its own, much stricter one.
