So anyway, I saw this Sonam Wangchuk fellow on the news—the one who does those hunger strikes for Ladakh—and all I could think was, yaar, that’s exactly what it feels like when my daughter’s tuition date passes and I’m still counting coins from the sari stall. He’s asking for what’s fair, and here I am watching these chess girls in our school program, who could be the next big thing, but their families can’t even afford a bus to the district tournament. Why does every little step for these kids have to feel like digging a well with a spoon? You ever wonder how many champions we lose just because the system takes too long to move?

That chess bit hit straight—there's a girl in my tuitions, sharp as anything with numbers, and I know her mother skips lunch so she can afford the bus fare to district exams. We lose champions not because they lack talent, but because the system makes every small step feel like a loan for surgery.
