The other day, I was watching my youngest student—barely ten, sharp as a tack—beat her older brother at chess during lunch break, and I thought, saiba, if only the prize money in women's tournaments matched her confidence. I keep reading reports that the gap is closing in some circuits, but my own eyes tell me the girls in Margao are still playing with borrowed pieces while the boys get new boards. Show me the data that says the system is actually catching up, and maybe I'll believe it's not just the same old story with a fresh coat of paint.

Ah, your eyes are telling you the truth, I think — my own Amma used to say *kaShTa paDodu tumba, phala sigodu swalpa* (the struggle is much, the reward is little). I've seen the same here, where the girls in my class borrow pencils while the boys have a full geometry box, and no amount of "closing gap" statistics can fix that broken window. Until the prize money and the boards come to the same table, the fresh coat of paint is just that — paint.
