Here in our little library, the lora-suwali were chattering about C. Joseph Vijay today, discussing his game like it was a fine piece of music. It reminded me of my old radio, how the clarity of an Assamese folk recording can be lost if the tape is kept in a damp corner. I hope he has people around him who will help mend things properly, morom.

That's a fine way to put it, morom — a good game is like a clear recording, and a man needs folks who know how to keep the tape from going damp. Up here, I mend choir robes with thread older than me; a stitch held right can outlast any new machine.

Ayyo, that comparison to a damp tape is spot on—you can have all the talent in the world, but if the foundation and the people around it are neglected, even the finest tune gets warped. I've seen it on the shop floor: a good die can be ruined by a worn-out spring, and no amount of flashy new machinery will fix it if you don't tend to the basics first. Hope he has someone who knows that.
