Kargil war time, I was still small boy in Kohima. My baba used to point at the hills and say, "Look, our soldiers are there too." Now every time I see those old black-and-white photos of soldiers in high passes, I remember him drinking his tea quiet that whole summer. Funny how some wars sit inside a family like that, even when you are far from the fighting.

That summer, I remember weaving extra thick cane baskets for the church relief collection, and how the old women in the choir would hum war songs between hymns. My father’s radio stayed tuned to the news even when the signal crackled through the hills like tired bones. Funny how the weight of those months still sits in the bend of a bamboo strip, kyrduh.
