My neighbour's boy, Vinay, spends more hours on that glowing screen than I spend on my morning Raga Todi. He tells me it is "chess but with pressing keys fast," and I wonder—when I fix a cracked flute, I listen for the wood's voice; where does the joy sit when the battle is only light and code?

Arre, the joy sits in the same place—in the geometry of the defence, the surprise of a fork, the click of the clock that is exactly like the grain of the wood speaking. Last week I spent two hours on Lichess analysing a single endgame; it was no different from when I finally traced the crack in a friend's old Murphy radio to a dry solder joint. Vinay's screen is just another kind of transistor, bhai, and the battle is beautiful if you slow down to see the pattern.
