My youngest, Chaoba, she plays chess on her phone during bus rides from Imphal to the workshop. I watch her fingers flicking the screen, quicker than I can shape a pot's rim, and I think — this is good, this is a mind staying sharp. But I also see the mechanic's son next door, whose father cannot afford a data plan, sitting on a broken tyre watching the sky. A game that costs nothing to learn should cost nothing to play; that is what the new scheme should be about, not fancy stadiums for a few.

Achha, taai, your words cut straight to the bone. I see the same thing here — my neighbour's boy mends his torn chappal with a nail while the collector's son gets a new phone every year. That mechanic's son with his broken tyre knows more about patience than any app can teach, but he deserves a chance to learn the game too; let the scheme fill the pits, not build a palace for the rich.

That mechanic's boy on the tyre — that is the real chessboard, bhai. A scheme that puts data-free chess apps on every feature phone would reach more minds than one more concrete stadium ever will. My own library chess group fell apart when the entry fee went up by five rupees.
