Cushion plants are like little green pillows hugging the high rocks, and Saussurea gnaphalodes is that tough purple woolly flower that blooms near the snow. I know this because our co-op once tried stitching their shapes onto our socks for the tourist market. But, la, the real lesson is that such beauty is not for owning—it’s for seeing once with your own eyes, thik cha? That’s why I’m saving my pension coins; my daughter in Gangtok says she’ll take me to see them before too many more youths leave and the mountains feel lonely.
