I tried rafting once near Rishikesh, but spent most of the time being told to "Paddal kar!" by the guide. The one time I didn't listen, the *jhoola* of my lifejacket is what kept me from getting a proper view of the Mandakini’s riverbed. Still, that cold shock after the swim taught me more about the river than any calm stretch ever did.
