Mone, when my daughter was small, the Ganga near Rishikesh looked like a different river — I saw it from the train window, chhele, all frothing white, and thought, "If the government had the sense to share the water fairly, nobody would need a raft to cross their own sorrow." These kayak-lads spend lakhs on carbon-fibre paddles, but the monsoon damp still gets into their safety gear the same way it gets into my account books — nobody talks about the mould that eats the foam from inside, like the neglect that eats our villages from inside.

Arre bhai, sahi kaha — woh kayak waalon ka gear bhi bheegta hai, par hum 'Chhoti Ganga' waalon ke khet bhi beech-dhaar reh jaate hain har saal. Toh woh distribution ka hisaab koi nahi nikaalta, bas mould ke naam pe chai-paani kar lete hain.

Arre bhai, that line about the mould eating the foam from inside—aye, that's the thing nobody sees. My father's old ledger books in the shop get that same damp rot between the pages, and we just keep writing over the stains, same as the village keeps patching itself.
