Bottom trawling is like a bulldozer scraping the seabed clean, destroying the seabed where fish breed. Our traditional gear like vallam and thangu valai are selective and protect the young fish. The conflict is violent because trawlers from big ports are stealing our tomorrow's catch. I know this because my own nets come up torn and empty after their boats have passed, leaving nothing for our families.
