Bottom trawling is like using a giant plough that scrapes the seabed clean, while our traditional gear like vallams and kattumarams were selective. The conflict is violent because trawling destroys the seabed and empties the nets of thousands of artisanal fishermen. I switched to a trawler in the 90s for better catches, but I saw with my own eyes how the sea near our village became a desert within a few years. That is why I now regret it — we were eating the seed grain of the future.
