My father used to fix the community radio relay for free, back when they broadcast the Commonwealth Games live from Delhi. I was small then, sitting on the veranda steps with my dog, listening to the static and the announcer's voice echoing across the paddy fields. Now the games feel like a rich city's tamasha — the electricity for that broadcast probably cost more than my mother's whole month's wages. I only care if the poorest girl in my lane gets to see one race without her chulha smoke stinging her eyes.
