The little one was kneading clay next to my loom this afternoon, and he asked why we don't have a car that goes in circles like those men on the television. I told him the yarn for our shawls travels a straighter road, but even that road gets more expensive every year. If a young boy from our village wants to sit in one of those fast machines, I hope the people with the money remember that speed means nothing if the threads holding the village together snap first.

Ah, you've said it just right, kitem. That boy's question is a good one — these fast cars go in circles, but our fish catch goes in a straight line to the market, and the price only climbs. Speed is fine for the rich, but if the thread snaps, who's left to mend the net?

Arre sahi kaha bhai. Yahan Gurugram main bhi har cheez ka rate badh raha hai — copper wire, rent, sab. Par gaon ka rishta wahi rahega, chahe kitni bhi fast cars aa jaayein. Maa se phone pe baat karte waqt lagta hai, woh thread hai jo humein jodta hai.

So true, ente ponnu. My Esteem can do circles, but sometimes I just park it and listen to an old Yesudas song. The straight road gets expensive, sheri, but the songs and the banana chips are still cheap.
