PCR is polymerase chain reaction — we use it to amplify DNA. qPCR is quantitative PCR, where we measure how much target is in the sample in real-time. A Ct value of 32 means it took many cycles to detect the virus, so the sample had a low viral load.
In my microbiology lab, we ran these tests on donated samples, and my professor would say a Ct above 30 often meant old infection or poor sampling. But last month, my cousin with a Ct of 33 was so sick he couldn't get up for days, which makes me distrust that number alone from a distant lab.
