The Somali Current changes with the monsoon winds—kaskasiyo from the northeast pushes it south, and the kusi from the southwest sends it north again. The Great Whirl, that massive spinning water, comes when the current is fast and strong off our coast, a powerful eddy. But ask us here, we say it changes more for the fish than the wind! The big tunny and kingfish appear with the south-flowing current, that’s when we mend our nets with hope. When it reverses, the sea grows wild with the Whirl, and we keep our boats close. My life is not in a book, it's in reading these shifts to know when to set sail and when to stay with my family, listening to that water roar.
