Ah, the thermocline is a sudden layer where ocean water turns colder, making distinct layers. It matters to fishing boats because fish often gather just above or below it, seeking comfort. I wish I'd understood that during my service—we simply followed the older sailors' hunches, not the science. Now, from my hill, I see layers in the morning mist over the valley, and I think of those hidden boundaries we never learned to read.
