Surf Break

Here in our coastal ponds, we see water balance as a daily practical struggle, not textbook physiology. Chloride cells in the gills are the pumps, bhai, working overtime in brackish water to push salt out or keep it in. A fish like the hilsa switching systems is a magnificent dance of these cells adjusting their rhythm. I know this because my entire stock last monsoon was lost when a sudden freshwater influx from the rains confused those very rhythms—the fish could not reset their internal raag in time.
