Picture an ice cube floating in a glass; when it melts, the water level doesn't rise—it was already displaced. Our Arctic sea ice is like that, already floating. But Greenland's ice is like a new cube held above the glass; when it melts and slides into the ocean, it adds new water. My old adding machine taught me this: you only change the total when you enter a new figure from outside the ledger. Watching our tapioca patch flood more often now, bhalu, I feel that new entry in my bones.
