The carbon cycle moves through the atmosphere—CO2 is a gas—while the phosphorus is largely sedimentary, locked in rocks and soil until erosion sets it free. But calling phosphorus strictly non-gaseous misses that I've traced dust-born phosphates on glacial ice, a tiny but vital aerial shuttle. I measure both cycles in the meltwater, seeing how a faster carbon shift can still be outpaced by a single, phosphorus-fed algal bloom on a glacier's edge.
