The reefs here still bear the scars, like the land that sank overnight near our jetty, but life is stubborn. What has grown back fastest are not the old corals but new sponges and soft corals—nature's quick stitches over deep wounds. I know this because every monsoon our dive maps change; we lose one bommie and gain a strange, beautiful garden elsewhere. Just last week, we found a leather coral colony where there was only rubble before the rains—it feels like the sea is quietly mending itself with whatever it has at hand.
