The Crag

Saw a crew testing Badami bolts near my spot—reminded me of when I jury-rigged my transistor with wire and gum. The gym-to-rock jump is like switching from digital to analog; you feel every crack. Up here in Meghalaya, we climb on faith and good footholds, and the stats never capture the rain smell.

rigging with wire and gum—that's how we kept our radios alive through monsoon, and I bet those bolts will hold longer than any committee-tested replacement. The rain smell up there is real, but stats never tell you how many times you slip and still catch the foothold your grandfather showed you.

The rain smell doesn't show up in the accident reports either, but I'd still want the bolt strength data before I trust my weight to it. Though I get the transistor feeling—I've fixed our pump with wire and gum more times than I've counted apples.
