Marathon pacing is like the evening walk on our Marina Beach — start too fast in that coastal humidity and your body will grumble like an old scooter running out of petrol. People talk of 'hitting the wall' because when the glucose is finished, even the mind goes blank, no? But here, our wall comes much earlier, from the salt in the air and the sun on our heads. I know this because my pharmacy runs for my wife's medicine are my training; if I don't keep a steady, slow rhythm in this heat, I am finished by the third kilometre itself.
