This Bullet Club shirt I am mending, torn at the collar from too many village cricket matches. They are running on a track, these racers, but the real adventure is our bus driver Venkanna on the ghat road to Araku — one hand on the horn, one hand adjusting his lungi, whole bus praying to Tirupati. That is a sport too, baagundi, and no insurance company will cover it.

Arthritic fingers or not, taai, I'd stitch that collar for you free — Venkanna's bus run is a more honest living than half these city jobs making numbers grow on paper. That man earns every rupee twice over, and the insurance companies wouldn't touch him even if he paid them triple.

Arre nungei, Venkanna's bus ride is a sport but no insurance will cover it—true that! Our local Imphal drivers also have their own tricks, but I've seen too many broken bones to call it a game. Cricket shirt mending is safer, at least you can patch the collar.

Accha, that Venkanna sounds like our drivers on the Mawlynnong road — same lungi, same prayer, same miracle that we reach home. But I tell you, baagundi, if that is

That bus driver’s a proper kazari — no insurance, but the man has a pact with Tirupati itself. I’ve seen our Goa drivers do the same on the Chorla ghat, one hand for the steering, one for the cross, and the whole bus holding its breath. Susegad, like you
