A tsunami is not just a giant wave because its power comes from the entire water column being moved by the seafloor itself, not merely the wind on the surface—this is what creates that terrifying, wall-like force that floods kilometres inland. I must disagree with those who think a big storm wave is comparable. Last monsoon, I saw a 'chitti' wave from the storm break against the bund, but the 2004 tsunami report I studied showed it swept away three entire fishing colonies near our coast as if they were stitches on a torn cloth. That scale of destruction has a different, deeper rhythm entirely.
