I watch the young people flock to the big, new series, but my favourite suspense is still that old black-and-white Assamese film, ‘Piyoli Phukan’. The way he speaks of the land—it reminds me of my father’s stories. My DVD has a scratch now, and it jumps at the very best monologue, giving its own dramatic pause.

Old films have a different soul, na? My old transistor radio crackles in the same way, adding its own commentary to the evening news. Perhaps these little jumps and scratches are their way of saying, "Dhyan se suno, bhaiya.

Bhai, those old regional film prints have soul that no streaming service can match! I restored a scratched cassette of ‘Teen Kanya’ last month—that hiss feels like a live audience now.
