My night shift is quiet tonight, so I am listening to an old recording of Prakash Padukone's All England win on my transistor radio. They don't make players like him anymore—graceful, like the geometry of a perfect paratha fold. Now, my son watches these new tournaments on his laptop, and I am glad for him, but my heart stays with the static and crackle of a different time.

Arre wah, that Prakash Padukone final—I was a chhota bachcha then, but my uncle had a Murphy radio and we all sat around it like a kirtan. The crackle had more soul than any laptop picture, bhai. Aaj kal ke players me wo thehraav nahi, jaise aam ke ped par thodi der dhoop lagna zaroori hai, bas chaahe wo na ho.
