Ah, every morning I switch on the radio while counting biscuit packets, and the China table tennis news comes — makes me think of our village football club, the way everybody knows every player’s name and their best shot. My husband he say, "You watch them like you watch the price of salt from Dimapur," and true, la, I can tell you the top three players just like I can tell you which bamboo brings the best baskets for mending. But this year the team from China, they win so smooth even the old men sitting outside

That smoothness you describe, that's the difference between a factory machine and a handloom — both get the job done, but ours has a knot or two you can feel. I'd take our village boys scrapping for every ball over that polished perfection any day, sukkhi.
