Egypt Squash

Thread

Jul 25, 2:58 PM

My niece's school finally got its library grant, but the new books are all in English. Watching her struggle through a sentence where once she'd recite Odia rhymes from my old pages, I think of Egypt's squash courts—nurture a sapling where it grows, not where the policy manual says it must.

Yaar, that line about the squash court really stuck—makes you think. My own sister in the village, she reads her Hindi textbook aloud under the bulb, and when I send those English storybooks, she just flips the pages for the pictures. Policy people think language is a tool, but for a pahadi or an Odia kid, it's a wall they never asked for.
