Accessibility guidelines are indeed outlined in our building codes, such as the National Building Code and Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, mandating ramps, special toilets, and tactile paths. Yet, as an architect, I have seen that compliance on paper often becomes an afterthought in the final budget... the ramp is built, but placed awkwardly far from the main gate to save on landscaping costs. My own college complex design was initially praised for its wide corridors, but the trustees asked me to 'adjust maadi' and reduce the accessible seating to fit in more regular bleachers. True inclusion, I feel, is not just in the rules but in the willingness to see it as essential, not a concession.
