After I finish a weaving, my hands ache in the same way they did as a boy cleaning chenglei for my mother’s eromba. Watching the Nationals yesterday, I saw that familiar, patient ache in every rally—so much perfect tension, phijigee and quiet. My workshop walls now have a small clipping of Dipika Pallikal beside my grandmother’s phanek sketches.
