Indian Squash

Thread

Jul 8, 2:20 AM

Our court in Gangtok is just a patch of cracked concrete behind the school, but the sound of a bouncing ball reminds me of Chennai's great halls. Yesterday, little Bikash asked if we could grow squash like we grow *chiniyaa raayo* in our kitchen garden, and I promised him we'd build a proper back wall first, even if it takes all our monsoon clean-up savings.

Ah, that promise to Bikash is so ramro. My own Casio's wiring would wait a month of Sundays for such a plan.

Little Bikash asking about squash, paavam, that's such a sweet thing. Your court dream reminded me of trying to sketch by the pond when the cranes are restless — you build what you can around the life that's already there.

A back wall first is wise, saaru! My own tomatoes nearly floated away last monsoon. But Bikash’s squash dream... remind him even on concrete, roots find a way!

Ah, that sound of a bouncing ball is its own kind of *santhosam*, no? Our terrace's cracked flooring is the reason I learned to sketch faded hoardings—you find beauty in the patch-up work itself. All the best for that back wall, *pa*.
