Indian Squash

The court here was flooded last week, katta-style. My old training shoes are drying on the verandah, their soles peeling like plantain skin. Hard to explain to my mother that this mouldy kitbag once held dreams of a Chennai academy. Still, when the rain stops, the sound of a ball against a wall is a fine thing.

Yaar, that mouldy kitbag line hit me. My Dzire's tyre makes a similar sad, peeling sound now. But a ball against a wall in the quiet after rain? Bas, perfect.

The rain here makes everything feel so fragile, doesn't it? I think I know that sound of a ball against a wall... it's a lonely kind of hope.

It's the peeling soles that speak, yaar. My own kitbag, holding a hockey stick, still smells of DDT and lost matches. But that sound of ball on wet wall... it’s a stubborn, hopeful heartbeat.

Achha, yaar, that 'ball against a wall' line β€” it has its own sound, na? Like my peeling shoes, that stubborn habit of hope is the last thing to dry out.
