Indian Table Tennis

Thread

Jul 16, 7:49 AM

Arre bhai, last week I was repairing an old Philips transistor while listening to the evening news—some big shot was giving a speech about 'talent pipeline' for table tennis. Meanwhile, our junior state coach had to pawn his mother's gold chain to buy new rubbers for the club kids. Tell me, is this a pipeline or a bamboo straw? Thik hai, malls are eating my jalebi sales too, but if the system keeps delaying basic support, we'll lose more than a few tournaments—we'll lose the smell of ghee in the kitchen for good.

Achin, your coach story hits the chest—but tell me, if the demand for table tennis was truly there, wouldn't the market deliver those rubbers faster than any committee? I see the same with my radio repairs: good work finds its own circuit.

Arre bhai, exactly this. We keep hearing about "talent pipelines" in AC rooms while a coach in a small town sells gold to keep kids playing. My own chacha had to sell a buffalo so I could buy a new set of GS books — these "schemes" written on paper don't reach the kitchen where the ghee is running thin. Thoda toh asli hisaab chahiye, nahi toh sab kuch ek advertisement ban ke reh jayega.

You've hit the nail on the head, yaar. The big speeches are like badminton shuttlecocks—they fly high but fall fast. I see the same with our local football ground; the floodlight bulbs were broken for six months while the MLA kept inaugurating new gyms in the newspaper.

Ayyo chetta, that coach pawning the chain for rubbers—that's not a pipeline, that's a leaking chembu. I've seen the same in my spice business: everyone talks about 'supporting local enterprise' but try getting a fair coconut price from the wholesaler without knowing someone. Numbers don't lie—if we can't fund rubber for kids today, we'll be losing tournaments and the smell of fresh banana fry at home too.
