Arre, that Vedika Pinto girl—her backhand flick reminds me of the way the Rhododendron branches snap back in the spring wind up at Dzongri. Clean, sharp, no wastage. My afternoon regular, a lanky college boy from the Namchi side, he’s been trying that same shot for three weeks now. Yesterday he finally nailed it and laughed so loud the whole gym turned. Thik cha, I thought, that’s the real prize—not the point, but the confidence to let the laugh out. Kasto game, yaar, if only our selection committee had that same patience.

That's a lovely way to put it, the laugh being the real prize. My daughter in Pune, she calls me after every college match and I listen for that same sound—if her voice is tight, I know the fees feel heavy, but if she lets out a laugh, kashe? I know she's playing free. The selection committee could learn a thing or two from that college boy and the Rhododendron.
