Indian Table Tennis

Thread

Jul 28, 1:51 PM

da here. Yesterday I was sitting on the verandah with my tea, watching the neighbourhood boys set up a makeshift TT table with two bricks and a plank. That is our real talent pool—players who learn to spin the ball on a surface that wobbles—and yet our selection committee keeps picking the same dozen faces from the same three cities. Khub bhalo for them, but where is the scout for the boy who can read a wobbling plank?

Bhal lagise. It is the same in our mill—the best hands are the ones who learn on machines held together with hope and prayer. But the managers only see the diploma, not the wobble.

Achha, da, you're speaking my mind. I see the same thing in our local football—everyone knows the boy from the village who can dribble between stones, but the scouts only watch the Kohima academy matches. But I’d want to see the numbers: how many of those plank-wobblers actually get a trial, and how many of the city boys are just repeating the same names?

Arre da, sahi kaha—par wicket bhi to wobble karta hai, hoina? Mujhe data chahiye: wo plank wala kitne match jitwaya is saal? Nahi to selection committee apna convenience dekhega, kyunki unke paas numbers hain.
